I’ve been photographing this little boy since he was a newborn. Every year I look forward to seeing how much he’s changed and grown. I mean, my goodness, look at that beautiful red hair. Could he possibly get any cuter? This year his mom asked me if I’d be up for doing the photos with her parents at the ranch and wheat farm she grew up on. Are you kidding me? Yes to millionth degree!

The farmhouse is nestled in the hills near Pendleton, Ore. After a lovely drive down there, I arrived to find a beautiful old red barn and the grandfather saddling up a horse under the awning of a wooden grain elevator. Oh my! This was going to be good.

The place was amazing, and frankly these images are only the tip of the iceberg. I could have gone on and on; however, a two-year-old only has the patience for so many photos. But hey, at least that leaves me with plenty of places to photograph in the future.

It was such a pleasure, too, photographing the grandparents. From the top of his Stetson down to his silver rodeo belt buckle, and starched Wranglers, the grandfather was a true cowboy through and through. And his wife was such a lady. They met in College in California. He was there for the rodeo team, and she was a young debutante. It looks like he was pretty good at roping because the rest, as they say, is history. It was such an honor documenting three generations on their family farm.

I’ve been a professional full-time photographer for a very, very long time — over fifteen years. But when I started my own business four years ago I still had a lot to learn. As a newspaper photojournalist all I had to worry about was getting the shot…well maybe three or four, but really it’s just a couple from each story I did. Usually I only had three assignments a day, so unless it was a sporting event or an in-depth photo essay, I was only imaging about ten final photos a day. Style was only a small part of the process. The most important thing was capturing the definitive moment of whatever story you were covering.

Why am I talking about this? Well it’s probably because looking at these family images is making me realize how much my shooting style and workflow has changed over the years. You’d think after having been a photographer for so long, these both would have been set in stone, but, in fact, this was far from true.

This family below was one of the first I photographed after I left the newspaper and started my own business. I still really love many of the images from that session, but looking at them you could almost think it was a different photographer who had taken them. Of course I still had the story telling images and the family interactions (I am a journalist after all), but four years ago open shade, back light, sun flare, and reflectors were hardly even in my vocabulary. A photojournalist doesn’t modify what they are photographing, they work with what they have. Maybe you throw in an off camera strobe, but really it’s just about capturing the moment, and anything that slows you down or changes the scene you are documenting is a big no no.

In many ways becoming a portrait photographer has freed my inner artist. I’ve had to learn a lot to get to the place I am now as a photographer. I am still telling the story of a family, but now I’m no longer held to the rigid hands off standards of a hardcore photojournalist. This has changed everything from my shooting technique to my post production imaging. I have been using Photoshop since it was practically invented (I probably just dated myself). But while my color correcting skills where top notch, I didn’t have a clue on how to use all the tips and techniques I do now. I had to teach myself everything from Lightroom to skin tone plugins to RAW conversion. As a newspaper photojournalist I would have been fired if I changed the color and tone of an image or added a texture. Now it’s an integral part of what I do every day.

Yes I am still a photojournalist, but now I’m also an artist. It will always be about the story, but now how the story is told is up to me.

So if someone walked up to me and said, “So, Sandy, what would make your perfect family portrait session?” It wouldn’t take long for me to respond. I’d say give me an adorable engaging family with kids from a variety of ages. Add the perfect wardrobe and accessories, a cool weathered barn, and, oh yeah, throw in some baby farm kitties to make it perfect. Well guess what, my wish came true, and I only had to go as far as the MC family’s backyard! Even their grass was perfect.

That’s it, I’m moving to Dayton!!!

OK, now for the next perfect family session…I’m thinking hot air balloons, and elephants…and trained bears dancing on circus balls, and cotton candy, and……….

Sweet little Jackson, my have you changed! I can’t believe it was only a few months ago when I photographed your newborn session in August. You’ve gone from tiny to tank! I loved getting to use the same basket, a family heirloom, in both sessions. I think it really shows how much he’s grown. Kudos to grandma for running it over to us shortly after inspiration struck. Of course, I had to get some images of big sis, Maddie, too. She always put’s a smile on my face.

Enjoy!

The C Family contacted me a few months ago. They were planning a big family celebration for Christmas. For the first time in years, everyone was going to be home for the holidays. To make the three-day weekend even more special, they would also be celebrating three birthdays and Dan, the family patriarch’s retirement. So yeah, it was a big deal, and they wanted a special way to remember the occasion. I was so honored that they chose me to capture the images from the last day of their gathering.

Enjoy!

Meet the “Z” Family. They’re a fun lot who are up for anything no matter what the weather. We originally planned to do this session just before Thanksgiving, and then the big snow storms started hitting. Fast forward almost two weeks later, and the snow was still there. That’s almost unheard of for this area. You won’t catch me complaining because it made for some very cool pictures. However, as I write this, it’s raining outside, melting all that gorgeous snow away. Well it was nice while it lasted, and I have the pictures to prove it.

Enjoy!

It had been about a year since I had seen the adorable Ben and his mom, Margo. His last session had produced some of my favorite images of 2009, so you could say I had high expectations for this go round. I needn’t have worried. When Ben showed up in suspenders, wingtip shoes, and a fedora I thought I had died and gone to photo heaven. I’m pretty sure Ben is used to the ladies fawning all over him, and I must say I was no exception. To make this session even more fun, his beautiful and sweet mom is expecting another baby in a few months. I love, love, love the maternity shots we got. Scrumptious light, a golden location, and beautiful, stylish details always add up to memorable images.

Enjoy!
