Wilder. I love that name. If I were ever to have another boy it would totally be on my list. The name just has a certain flair to it, just like this handsome fellow. And like his name, this little guy was no shrinking violet. I photographed him when he was nearly one month old. The funny thing about newborns is the older they get the harder it is to get them to….well sleep like a baby. Now as you can imagine, I have quite a few baby soothing techniques up my sleeve. Yet, sometimes the best technique is one the parents have already figured out. Cue super dad. When little Wilder needed to get back into a newborn zen state of mind, his daddy would load him up in the Baby Bjorn and off they’d go for a stroll around the block. They both covered a lot of ground this way, but hey, it worked beautifully. Back would come dad with a little cardio fit in, and bouncing baby boy would be fast asleep and ready for more pictures. Way to go dad!

It had been about a year since I had seen the adorable Ben and his mom, Margo. His last session had produced some of my favorite images of 2009, so you could say I had high expectations for this go round. I needn’t have worried. When Ben showed up in suspenders, wingtip shoes, and a fedora I thought I had died and gone to photo heaven. I’m pretty sure Ben is used to the ladies fawning all over him, and I must say I was no exception. To make this session even more fun, his beautiful and sweet mom is expecting another baby in a few months. I love, love, love the maternity shots we got. Scrumptious light, a golden location, and beautiful, stylish details always add up to memorable images.

Enjoy!

She made my job easy and fun as we spent a sweltering summer evening capturing her senior portraits. You’d never know it was well over 95 degrees out. In fact, the only hard part for me was deciding which images to show off here on the blog. She looked absolutely gorgeous in all of them. Poor photographer, such a dilemma to be in. LOL

Hey folks! You’ve probably noticed I’ve been derelict with the blog posts lately. Besides photo shoots and the gazillion albums I’ve been designing, I’ve also been exercising my editorial alter ego. Associated Press has me shooting the Washington high school basketball tournaments in my old stomping ground the Yakima SunDome. One set of championship games down, two more weeks to go! Boy I can’t tell you the last time I shot at 1600 ISO. Talk about ugly grain. But it’s good to know my trigger finger is still up to par. If I get a chance I’ll post you some fun stuff from it.

In the mean time, I just had to show you this cutie patootie from a recent newborn session. Little miss Sophie Jo was such a sweetheart, and such a good sleeper! We did the session at her grandmother’s house. I just loved using all her antiques for the photos. Let me tell you, this baby girl already has the whole family wrapped around her tiny little finger. What a lucky family!

Enjoy!

I’d like to introduce you to sweet little Alton. At almost one month old, he is a doll with a full head of red hair and dark blue eyes. With the wind whipping up a gale outside, he stayed nice and warm inside wrapped in the arms of his brand new mommy, as I snapped photo after photo of his cuteness. I particularly like the first one. I’d like to think I was channeling Rembrandt with the colors and the way the light falls on him. I also adore the photos of Alton cuddled with his mom. If you look closely you can see his “brothers”, two little Silky Terriers, sitting with them on the chair.

Stormy weather makes landscape photographs dramatic. The same can be said for portraits, even if that wasn’t my original intent. One of the coolest things about my job is that when I wake up in the morning, I have no idea what art I will have created by the time my day is over. Sure, I make detailed plans for each of my photo sessions, but you never know what’s actually going to happen: the way the light can change, how your subject’s personality is expressed, or how a freak thunder storm hits you out of nowhere.

I was really looking forward to doing baby Kaelynn’s newborn session outside. When we got there it was ninety five degrees and really sunny. Not even thirty minutes into our session the wind picks up, clouds move in, and the temperature drops by fifteen degrees. The wind whipping through the grass and trees and the dark, stormy skies made for stunning photography, but not really the best weather for little babies. Little Kaelynn and her parents were good sports though. We stuck it out for a little while longer to get these awesome photographs. However, when it started thundering and raining it was time to pack it up and move it inside where we finished out the session.

I’m not sure who was having more fun in the tall grass, me or lively Benjamin. Either way it made for some spectacular photos. I loved using the grass to frame him as he explored and played. His mother, Margo, was a good sport and well prepared with lots of snacks, juice, and kisses for her little man. I loved her dress and the color was a perfect contrast to the green landscape.

Enjoy!

My latest Maternity session was special because the subject is a friend of mine. Molly is also a photographer, so no pressure huh? Most recently she was at the Tri-City Herald for most of the time I was at the Yakima Herald-Republic. Even though our newspapers were in direct competition, I had long admired her work. Sadly, we didn’t actually meet until almost two years after I left my newspaper to get married and move to Eastern Washington. I was covering the Washington state track meet in Pasco for the Seattle Post Intelligencer when we finally met. There are so few women newspaper photojournalists that I knew right away who she was. We’ve been friends ever since.

It’s no surprise that Molly chose a gorgeous location for her photo shoot. It overlooks the Yakima River near Benton City. She and her husband, Gary, are adorable together. They’re waiting till the birth to find out the sex, too. How romantic!
